Electrical Apprentice

We asked Jahiem, to tell us about his experience with Aston Group so far.

I’m Jay an Electrical apprentice at Aston Group.

I joined early September 2021 after a long time through the pandemic searching for an apprenticeship. I knew about Aston Group previously as I lived in the local borough. I came across the job through college who gave me the chance to send my CV over to them.

Luckily enough, I heard back from them pretty quick and was offered an interview. The interview went great, however, I thought I wouldn’t get the job as they said someone else had more experience than me and they’ll let me know the decisions a week later.

Surprisingly, in the next few days I received an email with my offer of employment leaving me dumbfounded. I was so shocked after a long time of trying I didn’t know what to say, eventually I replied back in acceptance.

My first day on the job I was slightly nervous however the staff there are amazing and easy to click with. All staff I have come across treat you like you’ve been a part of the team from the get go and I’d like to thank my Domestics team especially.

I’d say my biggest success so far is going on a rewire job as I’ve always wanted to do one.

This was challenging as I had to chase out walls to the correct depth of back boxes, which on an electrical course at college you do not learn or go through.

On a day-to-day basis I do a lot of electrical testing, fault finding and remedial works such as installing fire alarms, new lights and sockets. Other days I could be helping and learning about solar, or doing new re-wires, it can vary.

If I’m given the opportunity to work long term for Aston Group, I would grab it 100% with both hands. The company is warm welcoming and always ready to help with any situation at hand.

For anyone that is looking for an apprenticeship, go for it and don’t look back. I’d say it’s the best thing I’ve ever done.

Search hard online, don’t be afraid to contact local companies in the area and ask college for help if they have any contacts or partnerships”.
